Building in Durban, on the South Coast or up the North Coast and need roof trusses? This guide covers what makes KwaZulu-Natal roofs different, how long trusses take from our Port Shepstone plant, and how to get an accurate quote.
Roof trusses made in Port Shepstone
Truss Master KwaZulu-Natal operates from Shop 1, corner of Oscar Nero Road and Main Harding Road, Marburg, Port Shepstone, near the Builders trade depot. The plant opened in 2022 and has a team of 15 people, including two roof designers. It supplies timber roof trusses designed on MiTek software, and we are ITC-SA accredited. The plant sits in the heart of the South Coast building market, and our own delivery trucks reach Durban, Pietermaritzburg and the rest of the province.
How long do roof trusses take in KwaZulu-Natal?
| Stage | Typical time at the Port Shepstone plant |
|---|---|
| Free design and quote | Usually within 2 days, depending on how complex the roof is |
| Site measurement | When your walls reach roof level |
| Manufacture | 3 to 5 days from a confirmed order |
| Laminated beams | About 14 days |
| Delivery | On our own trucks, across KwaZulu-Natal and into the Eastern Cape |
If your design includes laminated beams, order them early, because they take longer than the trusses themselves.
What do roof trusses cost in KwaZulu-Natal?
As a rough national guide, the timber roof structure for a house (trusses, battens and bracing) usually costs somewhere between R250 and R650 per square metre of roof area before the roof covering. Our roof truss price guide shows how the range is built up. In KwaZulu-Natal the main price drivers are:
- Roof shape: coastal homes often have hips, valleys and verandas, which add trusses and bracing.
- Span and pitch: open-plan living areas and steeper tile pitches need heavier designs.
- Delivery distance: a site in the Midlands or up the North Coast costs more to reach than one next to the plant.
- Timber treatment and grade: the specification your designer calls for affects the cost.
Designing for coastal KwaZulu-Natal
The KwaZulu-Natal coast is warm, humid and wet in summer, and many sites are close to the sea. That has three practical effects on a roof:
- Moisture and rot: timber must be correctly treated and kept dry in use. Good ventilation and a well-detailed roof covering matter as much as the trusses.
- Insects: termites and borer are a real concern in the province, so ask your designer and your local authority what treatment your roof timber needs.
- Wind and heavy rain: summer storms test the connections between trusses and walls. Our guide to truss spacing, pitch and bracing explains what your engineer will check.
